With its ever-changing terrain of volcanoes, lakes and dramatic cliffs, it is a great place for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. With 4-6 days of trekking through awe-inspiring landscapes, Rinjani is one of the world’s most famous trekking routes.

Discovering the Marine Life Around the Island

Lombok is also famed for its incredible snorkeling sites offering a wide variety of marine life. We spent many days exploring the stunning reefs and colourful coral gardens, from Gili Meno to Karang Bay in the north. For those looking for a more relaxed adventure, Gili Trawangan is a world-famous fishing village in the south – a great spot for swimming, beach-combing and browsing souvenirs.

The people of Lombok are some of the friendliest we encountered on our travels. At each location, we embraced the local customs, made acquaintances and chatted with locals to gain insights into their unusual culture and interesting history. We loved visiting traditional weaving and ikat fabric-making workshops and seeing local businesses at work.

After an unforgettable few weeks on the beach, we made our way to the rainforest and got lost in the untouched beauty of Lombok. We were fortunate to experience incredible adventures during our stay in Lombok. From exploring the indigenous villages to trying out the local food delicacies right in the heart of the island. Our journey started with how we arrived in Lombok.

We visited Lombok as part of a vacation package, organized by a local travel agency. After landing at the Lombok International Airport, we were met by a driver from our hotel and transferred to our luxury resort in the southern part of the island.

The following day, we ventured out of the resort to experience the rich cultural heritage of the island. We visited densely packed villages to witness the unique architectures of the traditional homes – ‘Lumbung’, which are tall and colored with bright hues. We were amazed to witness the weaving process of traditional ‘ikat’ and ‘songket’ cloth – designs inspired by the local culture.

The next day we set off on a spiritual exploration. We visited a few temples and marvelled at the captivating carvings and statues. It was striking to witness local priests offering karya rituals to local devotees, underlining the spiritual connection among the locals.

We later took a trip to the northern and western coast of Lombok, an area renowned for its stunning scenery. We were captivated by the views of the many pink-sand beaches, some of them smack in the middle of lush forests. We were awestruck by the abundantly clear waters and vibrant landscape. We couldn’t resist taking a dip and swimming with the turtles that inhabit the beaches.

Not to forget, we also tried some traditional Lombok food specialties during our stay. It’s incredible how they managed to turn simple ingredients into such delicious meals. The famous ‘Ayam Taliwang’, a spicy fried chicken dish that is served with rice, was especially pleasing to our taste buds. We also took part in a Satay feast. ‘Sate Rembiga’ – is a type of fish satay served in regional spices – was particularly enjoyable.

Looking past the homestay experience, we also did some research on nearby resorts that were renown for health and wellness treatments. We spotted a resort nearby that contained a luxurious spa and pool area – perfect for days when we just wanted to relax!

Delving Into Local Cuisine

We had also heard about the amazing traditional cuisine of Lombok Island, and so made it part of our must-do list. We took the initiative to connect with local eateries directly and try out their dishes. Every meal was an exciting new adventure as we sampled the local flavor. Every dish was cooked with fresh ingredients and had interesting twists that we had never tasted before. In Lombok, you can find all kinds of seafood dishes – a seafood-lovers paradise!

Exploring the crystal clear waters of Lombok was another treat in store. We went parasailing and enjoyed the wind-in-our-hair feeling, as well as hopped on a speedboat and tasted the refreshing spray on our faces. Once we were done exploring the waters, the next destination on our list was a hike to some of the most beautiful waterfalls around the island. With stunning ferns and trees, the sights were breathtaking and we saw some rare flora and fauna that left us in awe. We also saw wildlife that we had never seen before, and made several stops along the way to snap some pictures.

Although Lombok only lies a mere hour’s flight away from us, the holiday felt like an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city – and that was something we cherished.
